A Little Love from My Kitchen: Why Home Is More Than Four Walls
By Kam Zinsser | I’m Kam, Your Realtor | At Home with Kam
There’s something special about the feeling of home. It’s the smell of something delicious cooking in the kitchen, the laughter of family gathered around the dinner table, and the memories we make with the people we love. To me, that feeling of home is what makes a house truly special!
As a REALTOR® in Abilene, Texas, I spend my days helping people find the perfect place to call home. But when I’m not showing houses or working with clients, you’ll often find me in my kitchen, creating something delicious for my family!
That’s where At Home with Kam comes in!
Through my cooking series, I love sharing simple recipes, comfort foods, and kitchen tips that help bring that wonderful feeling of home into everyday life.
This week, I’m sharing three of my favorites: French Bread Pizza, Instant Pot Zuppa Toscana, and Crockpot Cherry Pear Buckle. Each recipe is easy to prepare, full of flavor, and perfect for making memories around the table.
🍕 French Bread Pizza: Bringing the Feeling of Home to Pizza Night
Who doesn’t love pizza night? Especially when it’s easy to make and tastes amazing!
One of my recent At Home with Kam favorites is French Bread Pizza. It’s simple, customizable, and perfect for those evenings when you want something homemade without spending hours in the kitchen.
What You’ll Need
- 1 loaf of French bread
- 1 pound Italian sausage
- Pepperoni
- 1 jar Rao’s Alfredo sauce
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- Butter
- Garlic salt
Let’s Get Cooking!
- Preheat your oven to 400°F.
- Cut your French bread in half lengthwise and scoop out a little of the extra bread from the center.
- Spread butter over the bread and sprinkle with garlic salt.
- Place the bread in the oven for approximately 10–15 minutes, until lightly toasted.
- While the bread is toasting, brown your Italian sausage in a skillet and drain.
- Remove the bread from the oven and spread Rao’s Alfredo sauce over each half.
- Add your toppings! I love using pepperoni on one side and Italian sausage on the other.
- Sprinkle generously with mozzarella cheese.
- Increase the oven temperature to 425°F and bake for approximately 15–20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- If you love a golden, slightly crispy cheese topping, place the pizza under the broiler briefly, watching it carefully.
And just like that, dinner is ready!
Kam’s Kitchen Tip: Toasting the French bread before adding your toppings helps keep the crust from becoming soggy. It’s a small step that makes a big difference!
This is one of those meals that brings everyone into the kitchen asking, “Is dinner ready yet?”
🍲 Zuppa Toscana: The Cozy Feeling of Home
When the weather starts cooling down, there’s nothing quite like a warm bowl of homemade soup.
My Instant Pot Zuppa Toscana is filled with savory sausage, tender potatoes, tortellini, spinach, and a creamy broth. It’s hearty, comforting, and perfect for gathering around the table.
What You’ll Need
- 1 pound Italian sausage
- Chicken broth
- 6 red potatoes, sliced
- 1 cup fresh spinach
- ¼ cup Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups tortellini, cooked
Let’s Get Cooking!
- Add chicken broth and sliced red potatoes to your Instant Pot.
- Use the soup setting to cook the potatoes until tender, following your Instant Pot’s instructions.
- While the potatoes cook, brown the Italian sausage in a skillet and drain any excess grease.
- Once the pressure has released safely, open the Instant Pot and add the cooked sausage.
- Stir in the fresh spinach, Parmesan cheese, cooked tortellini, and heavy cream.
- Use the slow-cook or sauté setting on low heat to allow everything to warm through and the flavors to come together. Stir occasionally and avoid boiling the cream.
Serve it in your favorite soup bowls, add some crusty bread, and enjoy!
Kam’s Kitchen Tip: I love adding tortellini to this soup because it makes an already delicious recipe even heartier. It’s a wonderful twist on a traditional favorite!
There’s just something about a pot of homemade soup that makes a house feel extra cozy.
🍒 Cherry Pear Buckle: Sweet Memories Made at Home
Now, you didn’t think I’d invite you into my kitchen without dessert, did you?
If you love an easy dessert that tastes like you’ve spent all afternoon baking, you’re going to love my Crockpot Cherry Pear Buckle!
This recipe is one of my favorites because it requires just a handful of ingredients, very little preparation, and your trusty crockpot.
What You’ll Need
- 1 can cherry pie filling
- 2 cans pears, drained
- 1 box yellow cake mix
- ½ cup butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Butter-flavored cooking spray
Let’s Get Cooking!
- Spray the inside of your crockpot with butter-flavored cooking spray.
- In a bowl, combine the cherry pie filling, drained pears, and vanilla extract.
- Pour the fruit mixture into the prepared crockpot.
- Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the fruit. Do not stir!
- Cut the butter into small pieces and distribute them evenly over the cake mix.
- Cover the top of the crockpot with a layer of approximately eight folded paper towels, keeping them securely beneath the lid and away from the heating elements.
- Place the lid on top and cook on LOW for approximately 4–6 hours, until the topping is cooked through.
And here’s my favorite advice: Don’t peek for the first three hours!
The paper towels help catch condensation so the topping doesn’t become too soggy. Just make sure they remain safely away from the crockpot’s heating elements.
Serve it warm, and if you’re feeling a little extra indulgent, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
Kam’s Kitchen Tip: This is a wonderful dessert for family gatherings because you can prepare it ahead of time and let the crockpot do the work.
Easy, delicious, and made with love. That’s my kind of dessert!
The feeling of home often comes from these little traditions—sharing something sweet, telling stories, and enjoying time together
❤️ Creating That Special Feeling of Home
As I think about these recipes, I’m reminded that some of life’s sweetest memories happen during the simplest moments.
It’s the family gathering around the table after a busy day. It’s the grandkids asking for another helping of dessert. It’s sharing a meal with friends, laughing over something silly, or enjoying a quiet evening at home.
Those are the moments that turn a house into something truly special.
And that’s one of the reasons I love real estate so much.
When I’m helping someone find a home, I’m not just thinking about square footage, countertops, or how many cars will fit in the garage. I’m thinking about the life that will happen inside those walls.
Will this kitchen become the place where holiday meals are prepared? Will the dining room be filled with family celebrations? Will the living room become the favorite gathering place for grandchildren, friends, and neighbors?
A house provides the space. The people, love, and memories make it HOME.
